Learning Plans

After taking this course, I learn lots of websites and ways to improve English ability, and most of them gave me new vision of learning. To make my listening and writing ability better, I would make good use of the following devices.

1. ESL Lab
The website made me feel really impressive as I first knew it. First of all, the article or conversation are divided into different levels, which enable users to practice from easy to difficult, also signify their progress. In addition, the articles are very close to our daily lives, not so professional, and I think it is very suitable for the beginners to start. Furthermore, their speaking speed is not so fast, so I wouldn't be frustrated when I am practicing. Last but not least, the website add some reading comprehension questions, so it is also good for the learners to give it a try!

2. COCA

When I get confused about every word I use in writing, COCA is the most appropriate website offer me suitable use of words. The website show frequency of every word usage, also offer examples in every different meaning. In addition to this online interface, you can also download extensive data for offline use, which means learners can make good use of their free time. What's more, the website is just like online academic dictionary, the examples offered aren't too verbal, so it is very appropriate for learns to take as a reference.

As the saying goes, "practice makes perfect". To improve your English ability, the most important point is your own motivation to try, and online English learning is just a media offered for people. I believe that by continuous practicing, the proficiency would gradually improve your English.

Mobile Learning Experience

Since the Internet develop stronger and stronger,
I gradually learn to improve my English through App in cellphone,
and Voicetube is the first software for me to practice listening and speaking.

Created in Chinese, it is very user-friendly for a beginner.
You can choose the channel you want to listen,
ranging from Ted talks,CNN, Taiwan blogger's learning channel.
If you get no idea as me, you can still go on practicing judged by your English level.

I choose the medium level, and choose my interested topic, music, to listen.

There are different accents for you to choose from,
I like British accent more, so I listened thorough all of them.
Also, some of the videos have questions to test your listening comprehension.

When learning new vocabulary, there are examples offered by the official,
and also subtitle and Chinese translation for you to take a look.
I get used to repeating listen to the video, therefore,
I could not only learn how to use the phrase, but also learn how to pronounce it correctly.

The above is my first mobile learning experience,
I used it almost everyday during the time I take the bus to school or go home.
Now this App gets its own website, because they got more and more followers!

Write Away

It's a tool designed for students to practice writing.
Since you are writing your essay, it would show you the usage of every word you typed immediately.
Also, it has academic , general ,overused category, making users choose by their need.
It's ,a good way to improve your writing in phrase,
but it is my suggestion that it would be better for learners to enter the topic he/she want,
then it has an example with better vocabulary and structure for him/her to take a look.
Because imitation is a better way for me to learn a skill,
and I believe learners could have bigger progress.

Review and Summary of a piece of news

News:

'Clean eating': How good is it for you? By Marie Jackson   BBC News

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-39576654?intlink_from_url=http://www.bbc.com/news/topics/b5a68823-bb0c-4229-b142-d6d5e09e113f/diet-and-nutrition&link_location=live-reporting-story

Summary:
To introduce what is "clean eating", such as the main points and the origin,
and show examples of the true meanings of "eating clean"

Review:
As the saying goes, "You are what you eat." In our society, more and more issues related to food safety emerged. The importance of food we choose in everyday life to eat can't be over-empathized. I started to pay much attention to the food I eat, including where they come from and how they are cooked to serve. The topic drew my attention right away as I noticed.
To my surprise, some of the comments in the article have a lot differences compare to my diet. Avoid to consume diary products and gluten food are the two I couldn't accept. I agree to take the original food,(eat fruit rather than juice) but it is unnecessary to keep away from the food you love, as long as it is "natural"  . I am addicted to cheese, so I would pick those with simple (no more than 5 ingredients) labels; I eat lots of vegetables and fruits everyday, and I would pick those from traditional markets.
For me, a good habit of diet cause no pain. I regard it as a good attitude of living. I wouldn't be envious when seeing others are digging in fried chicken or bubble milk tea. I believe if I treat my body well and do moderate exercise, I would got healthier life in my late years, and it is worthy for me to pay more attention on my every bite.

Cool English Response

Thanks to professor Chen's introduction, I got a new tool of learning English.
This website is designed for learners in elementary and junior high school.
I did some practices to understand more, and I really recommend this learning website.
First, every page in different sectors is clean and tidy,
making the learners easy to easy to find what they need.
Second, there are exercises provided for students of different levels,
Third, in addition to listening, speaking and writing, it also offers exercises for entrance exams.
Most importantly, the content in the exercises range from daily life,
common sense or some knowledge, and some of them are also fun.
(such as in picture 2, it tests your vocabularies and react speed at the same time. )

With so many kinds of useful function, I believe that  it could benefit lots of learners.
To promote this website, I think we should take it to campus,
it would be a good tool for teaching or testing, and could be assigned for homework as well.
Students could love to learn this language as long as teachers make good use to it.

ESL practice

I  did one exercise by this new learning website.
I didn't know this website until professor Chen introduce it.
Aftter doing the exercise, I think it is a suitable tool for all English language learner!
First, all of the practices are devided by different level, and it enable all kinds of learners to practice.
Second, the tone and speed are all falt, the voice didn't have so many ups and downs,
they spoke American English, and it is quite understandable since we are familiar.
Third, the content is very close to life, learns aren't required so much knowlege to answer the questions.

To sum up, ESL is a very good tool for those who want to improve listening in English.
After doing this practice, I think I would list the website as my daily assignment to improve my abiility!

COCA exercise 3

3. contemporary (n)
Meaning: existing or living at the same time
Frequency:25875
Example 1:
New York, USA; e-mail fboydbuffalo.edu. # 2134 Preparing students for college and careers in the 21st century has shed light on text complexity as an important variable for consideration in English Language Arts. Authors of The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) define text complexity as broad, highlighting qualitative, rather than quantitative evaluations of narrative fiction as appropriate for matching readers with texts. The text exemplar list published in the appendices of the CCSS, does not include contemporary works of young adult literature. Young adult literature can be used in English Language Arts classrooms to fulfill the expectations of the CCSS while meeting the appropriate qualitative evaluations of texts students in middle and high school grades are expected to read. This article examines qualitative evaluations of three works of young adult literature that are not only textually complex as defined by authors of the CCSS, but appropriate and engaging for adolescent identity and development. # FEATURE ARTICLE # ESTABLISHING ITS PLACE # How do you choose textually complex literature

Example 2:
has led to a rich interdisciplinary examination of scientific processes (e.g., Hand et al., 2003). Extending back to the 1950s, the prevailing definition of scientific literacy was fundamentally viewed as the general public's familiarity with scientific concepts (DeBoer, 2000). In tandem with science education reforms fueled by the standards movement, in the 1990s science literacy became largely intertwined with a pedagogy of inquiry (DeBoer, 2000). Since that time, scientific text structure and Discourse have come into sharper focus as key ingredients to scientific literacy. # Virtually all contemporary definitions of scientific literacy have continued to include the 1950s Sputnik-driven emphasis on a strong science knowledge base and ability to reason. For instance, building on Shamos's (1995) dichotomy of scientific literacy as either " functional " or " true, " Baram-Tsabari and Yarden (2004) defined functional scientific literacy as " the ability to converse, read, and write coherently in a nontechnical but meaningful context " (p. 403). They defined true scientific literacy as "' scientific habits of mind' such
